Most cyber attacks originate from the theft and fraudulent use of identification data. Multifactor authentication (MFA) is an effective countermeasure. MFA is an authentication approach that combines two or more distinct procedures to confirm a user’s identity rather than relying just on a username and password combination. MFA helps enterprises defend against identity theft, cyberattacks, and data breaches by preventing unauthorized access to apps and sensitive data.
MFA is an important part of a strong Access Management strategy that improves security. MFA is used by organizations to regulate access to internal IT systems and solutions, as well as to prevent data leakage, fraud, and misuse. MFA improves the security of traditional on-premise IT infrastructure as well as cloud security.
The three basic factors of authentication are:
Knowledge
Something you know – like a password, pin, or answers to personal security question
Possession
Something you have – OTPs generated by apps or sent via text or email
Inherence
Something you are – such as biometrics like fingerprints, vocal or facial recognition
Corporate network environments are typically large, with many points of access that can potentially be exploited to gain unauthorized entrance to the network, and to the resources and data within that network. In attempting to lock down systems against unauthorized access, cybersecurity teams will often use a “defense in depth” strategy whereby the system is protected by using multiple layers of defense that seek to ensure the protection individually of each of its components. Two such layers that are commonly employed are multi-factor authentication (MFA) and privileged access management (PAM).
A strong MFA solution in front of PAM helps to ensure that users are ‘who they say they are’ before they ever reach the point of access.
